A Conversation on Racial Health Disparities at the Intersection of Advocacy, Engineering, and Medicine: Lessons Learned from Systemic Racism and Underfunding in Sickle Cell Disease
This is a call for collective engagement to bring engineers, clinicians, industry leaders, legislators, and patient advocacy groups together to raise awareness and design approaches to address diseases and health disparities. In this virtual meeting, we expect the pooling of expertise and interests to drive material progress on underfunded diseases and the correlated health disparities.
Using sickle cell disease as a case study in an interactive session, a panel of experts will discuss the challenges at the intersection of medical and biological engineering, regulatory affairs, socioeconomic conditions, medical training, and venture capital.
Learning Objectives:
1) Educate AIMBE Fellows on how to most effectively engage their expertise to address these issues at a systems level
2) Brainstorm and identify key pain points that can be addressed by engaging federal, private, industry, and venture capital resources
3) Inform AIMBE Fellows on successful advocacy efforts that have engaged patient advocacy groups, industry, scientific societies, clinical care providers, and federal agencies
